About Halo-Lit (Reverse-Lit) Letters
Halo-lit letters, also called reverse-lit or back-lit letters, are built with opaque faces, usually aluminum or stainless steel, and LEDs that point toward the wall. The letters sit on stand-offs, so light spills out behind them and outlines each character with a glowing halo. It's an understated, premium look favored by salons, clinics, offices and boutique hotels.
Because the light reflects off your wall, the effect depends on the wall surface and color, the stand-off distance and the LED color temperature. We spell all of that out on your design proof, and you see the finished sign lit on video before it ships.
How it's built
Solid metal faces
Faces and returns are typically aluminum, painted or finished in brushed, mirror or painted metallic looks, so letters look crisp and solid in daylight.
Soft halo illumination
LEDs shine toward the wall through a clear polycarbonate or acrylic back, creating an even glow behind each letter.
Choice of light color
Choose warm white, neutral or cool white LEDs, or a colored halo to complement your brand.
Stand-off mounting
Letters are mounted on stand-offs, commonly 1 to 2 inches from the wall, to give the halo room to spread.
Combination option
Need more nighttime punch? Add a translucent face so letters glow on the front as well as behind.

How it looks
During the day, halo-lit letters look like clean, solid metal lettering floating slightly off the wall. At night, the faces stay dark or metallic while a soft ring of light glows on the wall behind them, producing a refined silhouette rather than bright faces.

What to plan for
- The halo shows best on smooth, light-colored walls. On dark, rough or patterned surfaces we may recommend a backer panel.
- Exterior signs usually need a sign permit and often landlord approval. We provide drawings and spec sheets for your submittals.
- Plan for a nearby power source and a licensed electrician to make the final connection.
- Halo letters read best at moderate distances. Rule of thumb: about 1 inch of letter height per 10 feet of viewing distance, and go larger if the sign must be read from the road at night.

Halo-Lit Letters questions
All FAQsAre halo-lit letters bright enough for a storefront?
They give a softer glow than front-lit letters, which suits many storefronts. If you need maximum brightness for a busy road, consider combination letters that are both front-lit and halo-lit.
What wall works best?
A smooth, light-colored wall reflects the halo most evenly. On brick, dark paint or textured surfaces, a painted backer panel can help.
Can I choose the color of the glow?
Yes. Warm white, neutral and cool white are most common, and colored LEDs are available. We note the LED color on your proof.
